Narrative:Flew into sea on night navex. Taking off from RAF Bircham Newton in Norfolk on a night sea navigation exercise. Communications were lost and assumed to be lost in the North Sea, possibly as a result of a lightning strike. The Times reported that 11 aircraft took off on the 3rd November on a search for the crew and aircraft. All four crew lost:
F/Lt. Patrick Jonathan Kenyon Pike (pilot) RAF Missing - believed killed
P/O Matthew Angus Scott (Obs.) RAF Missing - believed killed
AC1 Reginald William Stanley Rae (pass) RAF Missing - believed killed
AC2 Derek Alexander Wilson (pass) RAF Missing - believed killed
