Narrative:Little is known about the incident other than an unidentified Whitley landed near Rye Topping Farm, east of Brompton on 10th September 1940 in what is thought to have been a forced landing but with the wheels down. The aircraft is thought to have either been repaired on site and flown out or it landed undamaged and was flown out and returned into service. There is no record of a Whitley sustaining damage anywhere in this area on this date so if indeed it was damaged it must have only been slight. I have no details of the aircraft's serial number, base, squadron, crew etc.
f it were a "crash" then probably the only real "damaged" aircraft this could relate to is that of also unidentified Whitley operating with 77 Squadron. It was reported to have been damaged in action believed by flak on Ops to Berlin on the night of 10th/11th September 1940. At the very worst it is believed to have sustained Cat.R (repairable) damage, but its is not known whether it actually force landed away from base of Linton on Ouse or it made it back to base and was assessed there. The pilot being Sgt T.E. Coogan. There were a number of other Cat.R incidents on this date but all are thought to have occurred nearer their bases under or overshooting landings.
