9 Squadron, RAAF, Supermarine Walrus P5715, shipborne on the Royal Australian Navy cruiser HMAS Canberra, was lost with the ship when it was sunk at 08.00 hrs. on 9th August 1942, 7 miles south east of Savo Island (S 9 12 29" E 159 54 46'), during the naval battle Battle of, 'Savo Island' ('First Battle of the Solomon Sea'), Solomon Islands, South Pacific between the Japanese and and Allied navies.
