Narrative:Taking off from Terapo, Papua, the Pilatus Porter climbed rapidly immediately it became airborne, assuming an increasing nose-up attitude, until it stalled and dived to the ground. The aircraft was almost completely destroyed by impact. The aircraft, named "Mount Lamington" operated on its first commercial (air drop) flight in the Kanabea area. Pilot, Hodson Trevor Howse, was seriously injured. The sole passenger, Father Jean Besson (priest), was slightly injured.
CAUSE:
The cause of the accident was that the pilot neglected to set the tailplane trim to a position appropriate for the take-off and thereafter did not maintain control of the aircraft in the pitching plane by the means which were available to him.
