On 19 May 2022, the Ukrainian Air Force Sukhoi Su-24M, 69 White, of the 7th Tactical Aviation Brigade, was shot down by Russian forces near Soledar, Bakhmut Raion, Donetsk Oblast. The crew consisting of Podpolkovnik Igor Khmara and Mayor Ilya Negar did not survive.

According to an eyewitness, the aircraft was seen flying from the direction of Vasyukovka towards Soledar. After that, they saw a smoke trail emanating from the ground and tracking towards the aircraft, before witnessing the aircraft hit the port horizontal stabiliser of the aircraft, causing a large explosion.

Russian forces claimed responsibility for the downing of the aircraft, with spokesman Lieutenant-General Igor Konashenkov stating that "Fighter aircraft of the Russian Aerospace Forces shot down a Ukrainian Air Force Su-24 plane near the settlement of Slavyansk in the Donetsk People’s Republic".
