Narrative:On 10 October 2022, a Ukrainian Air Force Sukhoi Su-27 fighter jet of the 831st Tactical Aviation Brigade was downed in the vicinity of Shyshaky, Lubny Raion, Kharkiv Oblast.
The pilot, Polkovnik Oleg Vasilievich Shupik was killed in action. It is noteworthy that Shupik had previously served and subsequently retired in 2006, but returned in 2022. While Shupik was part of the 39th Tactical Aviation Brigade (the other Ukrainian Air Force Su-27 squadron), it appears that Shupik was piloting the 831st Brigade aircraft due to a shortage of usable airframes. The death of Shupik was officially confirmed by the Chernigov Oblast Military Registration and Enlistment Office and his funeral was held on 14 October 2022.
The circumstances of the aircraft loss air not completely clear. On 10 October 2022, forces of the Russian Federation launched a series of missile and loitering munition strikes targeting Ukrainian energy infrastructure. It is possible that the aircraft was lost while attempting to intercept these missiles or drones. However, the possibility of mechanical failure or pilot error can not be ruled out. Russian sources do not claim a successful shootdown of an aircraft on this day, making the possibility of an air launched, or air defence based shootdown less likely.
